Biography:
U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) athlete Derek Haldeman has proven his versatility as a shooter. Previously a Double Trap specialist, Haldeman earned a World Cup bronze medal in 2015 along with three other top-10 performances, before making the switch to Trap given the elimination of Double Trap from the Olympic program. Haldeman has competed in seven World Championships. Enjoys snowboarding, jiu jitsu and paintball guns when he is not training and studying. He is an avid hunter of ducks, geese, pheasant, quail and whitetail deer. When asked about his advice for junior shooters, Haldeman responded, “Stick with it. Whether you have a bad match, or a great match, just keep shooting.”
Competed in the event of Double Trap through the 2016 Olympic Games before making the switch to Trap following the elimination of that event from the Olympic program following the 2016 Olympic Games.
Haldeman's fifth-place finish at the 2017 World Championship is the highest for the U.S. in this event at the World Championship since 2006 when Bret Erickson won bronze.
At the 2019 Pan American Games, Haldeman and Brian Burrows helped end a quota-less streak in Men's Trap that dated back to 2008, the last time the U.S. qualified an individual for Olympic Games competition. The performance of Haldeman (silver) and Burrows (gold) ensured Team USA will have two representatives competing in Men's Trap in Tokyo 2020. The following day, Haldeman became Pan American Games champion in the Mixed Team event along with his girlfriend and partner Ashley Carroll.
